Chromium
Netherlands Study September 2003
In the Netherlands's double-blind, placebo-controlled study,
52 subjects were randomly assigned to 3 groups, to receive
placebo, 500 mcg, or 1000 mcg of chromium, as chromium picolinate,
per day. After 6 months, the average HbA1c in the 1000 mcg
chromium treated group showed a statistically significant
improvement (a decrease from 9.5% to 9.0%).
USDA study shows chromium picolinate supplements
help control diabetes
In the double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 180 people
with type 2 diabetes were randomized into one of three groups
receiving once-daily supplements of either 200 Wg of chromium
picolinate, 1,000 jig of chromium picolinate, or placebo
for 4 months. Patients were instructed not to change their
customary diets, exercise regimens, or medications.
Conclusions: Chromium picolinate supplementation
is easy, effective, and safe, and ought to be a consideration
for most patients with adult-onset diabetes."
Nuts
Journal of the American Medical Association
- Nov/Dec 2002
Researchers followed women from the Nurses Health Study
for 16 years. Women who ate at least five 1-ounce servings
of nuts a week decreased their chances of developing
diabetes by about 25 percent over the 16-year study.
Regular peanut-butter eaters benefited as well, though not
quite as much. These results held true even when weight,
smoking, family history of diabetes, alcohol consumption
and other risk factors for diabetes were taken into account.
Oils (Essential
Fatty Acids)
National Institute of Public Health and Environmental
Protection - 1993
Dutch researchers at the National Institute of Public Health
and Environmental Protection tested 175 normal healthy elderly
men and women to be sure they were free of both diabetes
and impaired glucose intolerance that often foreshadows
diabetes. Four years later, they tested the group again.
About 45 percent of the non-fish eaters had developed impaired
glucose tolerance, compared with only 25 percent of the
fish eaters.
*Perhaps a safer source of essential fatty acids these
days is flax seed oil or evening primrose oil (EPO). Fish
can have high levels of heavy metals due to water pollution.
