About Homeopathy - by Blair Lewis, PA
So What is Homeopathy? Homeopathy is a word that was coined by a German physician named Samuel Hahnemann in the 1790's. The word homeopathy is a combination of two Latin words: homeo meaning the same or similar and pathos meaning tragedy or suffering; thus, homeopathy literally means similar suffering . This word was the best way Hahnemann could describe this new medical methodology that he had discovered. The amazing discovery of homeopathy began when Hahnemann was working as a medical translator and physician. Hahnemann was given the task of translating Cullen's Materia Medica. The term "material medica" literally means the materials of medicine, and included the most current medical therapies. During his translation project, Hahnemann stumbled upon a very astringent Peruvian bark called "chinchona" or "china" that was commonly used in the treatment of malaria. Cullen's book noted that this bark contained quinine and concluded that "china" was helpful for malaria due to its astringent (drying) properties. In his translations of this work, Hahnemann made a bold footnote that he did not believe the bitterness or astringency of the Peruvian bark made it helpful in treating malaria. Instead, he believed that there was something unique and special about the bark. Then Hahnemann did something very unusual - he used his body as a laboratory. In an effort to further understand this Peruvian bark he decided he would consume it. He ground the bark into a powder and diluted it with sugar. He repeatedly consumed the bark dilution until finally he developed symptoms. Hahnemann's amazing discovery was that his symptoms from too much Peruvian bark were very similar to the symptoms of malaria. However he did not have malaria; once he stopped taking the bark he became well again. This experience of repeatedly consuming a substance until symptoms develop is called a "proving." Hahnemann took his findings a step further. He also discovered that very diluted extracts of Peruvian bark when given to patients ill with symptoms similar to his own experience, completely cured their illness. This astonishing finding inspired Hahnemann to experiment with other herbs and minerals. He started "proving clubs" with his medical colleagues and their families in order to understand the nature of various plants and elements. During his lifetime, he alone verified the unique nature of 90 different natural substances. This experiential knowledge of how the raw plant or herb effected human beings was organized into a text he called his "Homeopathic Materia Medica." Just as with the Peruvian bark, he matched the illness and experience of his patients with his personal Materia Medica of how humans responded to various substances. Once he found a good match, he gave the patient a very dilute dose of the natural substance and the patient had a curative response. Homeopathic Dilution To understand the safety of homeopathy, you need to understand the method of homeopathic dilutions. It is a science that is not fully understood by today's modern scientists but can be verified by several hundred years of clinical case studies. When you dilute a substance, you first have to start with the substance itself. Let's take a plant such as pulsatilla, the wood flower. First, the pharmacist grinds the plant, macerating it in alcohol which produces an herbal tincture, also known as the "mother tincture" of pulsatilla. From this mother tincture, the pharmacist then begins a series of serial dilutions. The first dilution begins with an empty vial in which 9 drops of water (or alcohol) are added with just one drop of the mother tincture. Thus, the first vial-- which we'll call vial 1--has a total of ten drops (9 drops of water and 1 drop of the original substance). The pharmacist then shakes this dilution very vigorously. The vigorous shaking between each dilution is what makes the homeopathic remedy active. This process of shaking is called succussion. It must be done between each dilution in order for a homeopathic remedy to be made. If the succussion is not done between each solution, the dilute solution will have no medicinal power. Next the pharmacist takes one drop from vial 1, and adds it to a new vial, vial 2, with nine drops of plain water and succusses it. This is called a 2x dilution of pulsatilla. Then the pharmacist takes one drop out of vial 2 and adds it to vial 3, then adding 9 drops of pure water and successes it. Vial three would then be labeled as a 3x homeopathic dilution.
If the pharmacist continues these serial dilutions 23 times, always adding one drop to nine plain drops of water, this yields a 23x dilution. The 23 rd dilution is significant because according to the 18 th century physicist Amadoe Avogadro, zero molecules of the original substance will be contained in the 23 rd dilution. Therefore, at a 23x dilution, zero molecules of the original mother tincture exist in the vial! With such a minute, non-physical dose with zero molecules of the original tincture remaining, it is not possible that such a highly diluted medicine could cause side effects nor toxicity. This amazing benefit is not available in any other system of medicine. A homeopathic remedy that clearly matches the symptoms of the patient will stimulate the body's healing forces to awaken, rise up, and rebalance their mind and body. Thus, curing the ills of the patient. If there is not enough similarity between the remedy and the patients symptoms, then the homeopathic remedy may have little to no effect on improving the patient's condition. Homeopathic remedies go even further than 23x in their diluting process--all the way up to 100,000 dilutions - most commonly, homeopathic remedies are prescribed at the dilutions of 30x, 200x, and 1000x. The incredible finding of Hahnemann and the homeopaths that followed him was that the more dilute the tincture became, the more powerful its effect on the patient became. This fact has made the modern understanding of homeopathy even more perplexing for today's scientists. Modern science cannot detect a single molecule of the original mother tincture in the 30x dilution vial, nor can it explain how more dilute remedies have a stronger, more curative effect on the patient. Furthermore, there are centesimal dilutions in homeopathy. These homeopathic remedies, denoted with the letter "c" (for centesimal) are made from dilutions of 99 drops of pure water instead of 9 drops, resulting in a vial having 100 drops in total. Both the decimal and centesimal dilutions of homeopathic remedies have over 200 years of clinical experience and many modern clinical trials proving that homeopathy is not a placebo medicine; rather it is a medicine that requires modern science and quantum physics to enjoin into a higher refinement of medicine and healing. Materia Medica The 90 substances tested in Hahnemann's lifetime can now be found in the Homeopathic Materia Medica along with addition medicines tested by Hahnemann's students and present-day homeopaths bring to total number of remedies to over 2000. Materia Medicas are a thorough listing of every homeopathic remedy and the symptoms they are known to heal. The Homeopathic Materia Medica has also been very insightful in understanding modern diseases. For instance, many Americans consume coffee on a daily basis. The Materia Medica listing for coffee has many mental symptoms. The listing for coffee cruda, the unroasted coffee bean, has the symptom of sensitivity to all sensory stimulation. Under the mental symptoms, the Materia Medica lists irritability, gaiety, excitement, impressionability, and being filled with ideas, quick to act, and tossing about in anguish. It also lists symptoms in the head, such as a tight pain made worse from noise and smell; and sensations as if the brain were torn to pieces from a nail driven into the head. If you have ever seen people go through coffee withdrawal, and they gets headaches, you may see that they have head pain similar to what is described. Coffee is also known to cause toothaches, which are temporarily relieved by holding ice water in the mouth. Coffee can cause symptoms of hasty eating and drinking, excessive hunger, intolerance of tight clothing, and sleeplessness on account of mental activity. So if I my patient was a small child who was teething, who felt better chewing on chips of ice, and had too much mental excitability to be able to stay asleep at night, I could say that this child's symptoms are most similar to the symptoms of too much coffee. This little child has not consumed any coffee at all, but the child has symptoms similar to the suffering of coffee intoxication. Applying Hahnemann's theory of letting likes be cured by likes, I would prescribe the homeopathic remedy of coffee and the child would likely have relief from teething.
